Ceylon as it was known then, was struck with a blight that crumbled the nation’s entire coffee industry which until that point was one of its biggest bounties. It was soon afterwards, when a Scottish planter named James Taylor sought an alternative to coffee to revive the country’s plantation sector.

His efforts were proven successful in the year 1867, as Taylor planted the first 19 acres of tea at Loolecondera. Identifying its immense potential, Taylor then shipped the first consignment of tea all the way to London, marking the birth of the finest the brew that we all know today as Ceylon Tea.

Today, as the world’s largest exporter of Black Orthodox tea, Sri Lanka’s tea plantations are incredibly vast and spans over an astonishing half a million acres, all the while maintaining the original orthodox manufacturing process. Even though this process only results in a small batch every time, it is this very same labour intensive activity that ensures the unique flavour and aroma that the world has come to associate with Ceylon Tea. With over a million Sri Lankans currently employed across the industry, this story stands as a testament to the amount of hard work that goes in every single day to ensure a simple, yet perfect of tea is delivered to all corners of the world.
